While it is true that others had cloud technologies before Amazon (Microsoft’s “Systems and Tools” business also preceded AWS), I don’t think there is any question that Amazon pioneered it as a business category. That’s why Amazon, along with Microsoft, lead the category and not those other companies. IBM, in particular, had to acquire another company to become competitive.
