I see your point, but I think it's important to note how poorly leaderless schemes have failed when they've been tried.

One great example is Google. As they began to grow, the founders wanted to maintain the startup feel they once had. So they eliminated a number of levels of management.

It was a disaster! managers had as many as 150 direct reports. Nobody could get anything done and they soon returned to a more hierarchical approach.
